| DUNSTABLE FRIENDLY POOL LEAGUE - LEAGUE RULES 2024/5. | |
| • Games consist of 6 Singles followed by 3 doubles matches. | |
| • Points for the match is Every Frame Counts. So you get One (1) point for each frame which is win. | |
| • Doubles matches to be played as what is termed as Scotch Doubles (see under scotch doubles) | |
| • Teams must have a minimum of 4 players to play the match. | |
| • Players are limited to 3 games per match. The only time a player can play 4 games per match is when a team has only 4 players. So all matches can be fulfilled. | |
| • The players can play in any order their captain wishes. | |
| • The Maximum amount of players in each team is ten (10) plus the team captain making a total of Eleven (11) players. | |
| • Each team has a “guest player option” The guest player can only play for one match (Tuesday night). They must join the team to play on any other Tuesday night they after. | |
| • Captains can have the “guest player option” replaced with a permanent player. Giving the team a total of eleven (11) players, plus the captain making a total team of twelve (12). | |
| • The Break will be deemed a “LEGAL BREAK” if the player breaking, obtains a minimum of “Three (3) cumulative points”. 1 point for each potted ball, 1 point for each ball crossing the centre line. The centre line is the imaginary line between the two centre pockets. | |
| 1. SPIRIT OF THE GAME | |
| • The game shall be known as English Pool Association ‘International eight ball pool’ (we play a version of new/old rules) all rules that must be played in a Sporting Manner at ALL times and within the SPIRIT OF THE GAME. | |
| • ABUSIVE, VIOLENCE, THREATS AND/OR UNSPORTMANSHIP BEHAVIOUR WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. THE PLAYER AND/OR TEAM COULD AND/OR WILL FACE DISMISSAL (BANNED FOR LIFE) OR/AND BAN (WEEK LIMITED) AND/OR TEAM LOSE OF POINTS. THIS APPLIES BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER THE MATCH. | |
| 2. THE OBJECT OF THE GAME | |
| • A version of EPA (International eight-ball pool) is played with a spotted cue ball and fifteen object balls, seven red, seven yellow and a striped eight-ball. | |
| • One player must pocket all balls of one group, while the other player must pocket the alternate coloured balls. | |
| • The player who pockets their entire group and THEN legally pockets the eight-ball wins the game. The eight-ball must be potted in a separate shot. | |
| 3. SCORECARDS & RESULTS (Via App) | |
| • Scorecards are to be filled out before starting of singles games and then again before starting of doubles games (see under scorecards (Via APP) ). | |
| • Home team breaks the first game, away team to referee then alternate throughout the game. | |
| • For Cup Competitions Singles/Doubles the home player is determined by see (6. LAG FOR BREAK). For Team Cup Competitions the captains or a team member do the Lag. | |
| • We play a version of new/old English Pool Association rules. | |
| 4. START TIMES & TEAMS ARRIVING LATE | |
| • Teams must have a minimum of 4 players to play the match. | |
| • Players are limited to 3 games per match. The only time a player can play 4 games per match is when a team has only 4 players. So all matches can be fulfilled. | |
| • Away Teams should arrive were possible before 8.15pm, so they may have up to 15 minutes practice (warm up, knock around) on the table before the match starts. If the table is occupied at 8.15pm, the up to 15 minutes practice (warm up, knock around) start when it becomes available for them to practice (warm up, knock around). This may delay the match start time of 8.30pm. | |
| • Matches can commence prior to the 8.30pm start time if both teams are present early and agree to do so. All players do not need to be at the venue before game commences but MUST be there before their match or they forfeit it to the opposing player. | |
| • Captain’s can arrange to start the match at an earlier start time, the earlier start time must be agreed by both team Captain’s, other wise the normal start time applies. | |
| •Should both teams agree to start early, you must ensure the VENUE is made aware you will be arriving and starting early. | |
| • If a team knows they are running late for the 8.30 pm start time, they should make a curtesy call to the opposing team captain or their designated team representative informing them that they are arriving late. | |
| • If a team does not arrive before the 8.30pm start time and they have NOT informed, made a curtesy call or contacted the other teams designated representative or Team Captain they forfeit their right to a warm-up on the table and game will commence as soon as teams are picked. | |
| • If the curtesy call is made BEFORE 8.30 pm, providing the delay to start time is a sensible one. (No more than 15-20mins as a guide) Teams should take travelling time into consideration when playing away. | |
| • If the team is not present by 8.30pm and have not made a curtesy call or contacted the team present can begin claiming frames, as time elapses in the following way | |
| 8.30pm – Free practice frame forfeited. | |
| 8.35pm – First single frame claimed (1 – 0 lead) | |
| 8.40pm – Second singles frame claimed (2 – 0) | |
| 8.45pm – Third singles frame claimed (3 – 0) | |
| 8.50pm – The Whole Match can be claimed. At this point the captain present should contact their league representative. Informing them of the match being claimed. A scorecard should also be completed, showing their intended singles line-up and texted to their league representative. | |
| 5. OUTSIDE INTERFERENCE AND COACHING | |
| OUTSIDE INTERFERENCE: | |
| • There is no penalty if balls are moved in these circumstances: | |
| (a) By persons other than players taking part in the frame OR | |
| (b) As a result of players being bumped OR | |
| (c) Events deemed not within a player's control. | |
| The referee will return the balls as close as possible to their original positions whenever possible. Re-racks will only be granted in extreme circumstances. | |
| The referee’s decision is final. | |
| (d) If playing with a shot clock. The referee can reset the shot clock if they consider the situation warrants. The decision is at the referee’s discretion. | |
| COACHING: | |
| • See (11. DOUBLES (Scotch Doubles)) for Coaching when playing Scotch Doubles. | |
| • During a frame, a player is required to play without receiving any advice from other persons relating to the playing of the frame. | |
| • If a team member or bona fide supporter of a player and/or team offers advice, the referee will issue a "First and final warning" to that person that any repetition will result in the player being penalised via a standard foul (TWO SHOTS, FREE Table). | |
| If after the First and Final Warning, and the player being penalised via a standard foul (TWO SHOTS, FREE Table) the coaching carries on and/or continues it is automatic Loss of Frame. | |
| Because it may not always be possible for the referee to hear if a statement made to a player is advice, the referee may issue the first and final warning because any statement made to a player, other than general barracking, is deemed to be coaching. | |
| In a match setting, a first and final warning may be given once only, before the commencement of the day's play as a block warning to all players and spectators. | |
| 6. LAG FOR BREAK | |
| • A “Lag for Break” shall determine who breaks first with an alternative break format taking place thereafter. The winner of the “LAG” is the player whose ball is closest to the Baulk cushion. The winner of the “LAG” is given the choice to break or not. | |
| • Lagging Procedure: (guidance, what should happen) | |
| 1. Balls shall be of equal size and weight (1 of each colour red/yellow). | |
| 2. To start the lag the referee will count the players in by counting back from 3 to 1. | |
| 3. The players shall simultaneously strike balls on the referee’s induction towards the top cushion. | |
| • It is an automatic loss of lag if a ball: | |
| 1. Crosses into the opponents half of the playing surface. OR | |
| 2. Fail to contact the top cushion. OR | |
| 3. Drops into a pocket. OR | |
| 4. Hits a side cushion. OR | |
| 5. Jumps off the table. OR | |
| 6. Comes to rest on the playing surface within the area of the corner pocket. OR | |
| 7. Player commits any standard foul. | |
| • Players will lag again if: | |
| 1. Both players foul. OR | |
| 2. The referee is unable to decide on which ball is closet to the bottom cushion. OR | |
| 3. One player’s ball strikes the top cushion before the other player’s ball is hit. | |
| 7. THE BREAK | |
| • To commence a frame, the player who is breaking, shall position the cue ball anywhere in the baulk but MUST NOT position the cue ball over the break line by more than 50% of its diameter. | |
| • The Break will be deemed a “LEGAL BREAK” if the player breaking, obtains a minimum of “Three (3) cumulative points”. | |
| 1 point for each object ball potted. | |
| 1 point for each object ball that has passed an imaginary line between the two centre pockets, that is not potted. A ball is deemed as having “passed” the centre line if the whole ball is over the imaginary line. | |
| • Failure to do so is a foul break and results in the balls being re-racked and the opponent has the option to break or to choose to give the break back to the original breaker. | |
| • If the black is potted from the break, the balls are re-racked and the same player starts the game, even if other balls are potted from the break. Apart from when the cue ball (white ball) is also potted. Then the opposing player has the option of the break or to pass it back to the original player that made the break. | |
| • If ball(s) from each or one group are potted, then the next colour ball the player hits is the colour they are on and play continues. | |
| • If the cue ball, on a legal break, Goes “in-off or leaves the table”, the incoming player is awarded a standard foul of two shots free table. | |
| 8. FOULS | |
| • FOLLOWING A FOUL SHOT THE OPPOSING PLAYER WILL HAVE TWO SHOTS WITH A FREE TABLE. | |
| THIS IS PLAYED FROM WHERE THE CUE BALL LIES AND COMMENCE THE VISIT OF TWO SHOTS, FREE TABLE. | |
| • It is always TWO SHOTS FREE TABLE following a foul, even if the black ball is the only remaining ball. | |
| • Once a player finishes their visit, if a ball is hanging over a pocket and falls before the opposing player addresses the table, if it is one of the balls of the player leaving the table then he/she continues with their visit, if the player addresses the table and it is one of the opposing players balls then it is a foul shot and opposing player continues the game with two shots and a free table. | |
| • Potting the cue ball - “In Off” or “directly into a pocket”. | |
| • Playing from outside baulk when obliged to play from Baulk. The break line is considered to be part of the baulk. | |
| • A player who plays a shot immediately after playing a foul or immediately after the referee has called a foul on that player. | |
| • Has played out of turn. This also includes Doubles. | |
| • Accidentally striking any ball other than the cue ball with any part of the cue or cue tip. | |
| • Playing a shot before all balls have come to rest from the previous shot or break. | |
| • Playing a “Push Shot” (defined as when the tip of the cue remains in contact with the cue ball once it has commenced a forward motion). | |
| • Double-hitting the cue ball. | |
| • Failing to perform a “Legal Shot”. | |
| • Playing a shot while not having at least one (1) foot touching the floor. | |
| • Failing to “Play Away” from a touching ball(s). | |
| • A ball that remains off the playing surface. | |
| • A player’s body, clothing, jewellery or accessory, or part of a cue (except for the tip in a legal shot), comes into contact with any ball(s). A tip falling off a cue or chalk dropped is the player’s responsibility. Should any of these contact a ball(s) on the playing surface, it is deemed a foul (Two Shots Free table). | |
| A player is responsible for their “Own” equipment brought to the table but not that which is “supplied” by the competition/venue itself. For example, If the end falls off a rest that has been “supplied” by the competition/venue which contacts a ball(s), this is deemed Not a foul. | |
| • Jump Shot: If the cue ball leaves the bed of the playing surface and does not strike an object ball that it would have struck had the cue ball not left the playing surface on an otherwise identical shot, then the cue ball is deemed to have jumped over that ball. | |
| • Marking the table to assist a shot. | |
| 9. LOSS OF FRAME FOULS | |
| • Deliberately NOT playing a ball from their own group (Colour Set) first, or an “on” ball after a foul. | |
| • A player who clearly and intentionally fails to make an attempt to play a ball(s) of their own group (colour set). | |
| • Unsporting behaviour/ bringing the game into disrepute. | |
| Including but not exclusive to: | |
| Continually arguing with the referee or opponent or interfering when the opponent is on the shot either verbally or physically. | |
| • Committing a foul in the same shot that the eight-ball is potted. (Except on the Break, see 7.Break). | |
| • Potting the eight-ball when a ball or balls of the players own group (colour set) are still on the table. (Except on the Break, see 7.Break). Including potting the last group (colour set) ball and the eight-ball in the same shot. | |
| • Potting the eight ball legally, then proceeding to move the remaining balls before they have come to rest. | |
| • Deliberately striking any ball(s) other than the cue ball with any part of the cue or cue tip. | |
| • Deliberately moving a ball(s) that were not played as part of a shot. | |
| • 10. STALEMATE SITUATION | |
| • If any situation arises whereby a “Legal Shot” cannot be played. It is a player’s responsibility to ask for a “Stalemate”. | |
| In other words, if there is not a path “Out” for the cue ball or not a path “into” the ball “On”, in the first instance the player must ask for a “Stalemate” if they believe a “Legal Shot” cannot be played. A decision on whether a stalemate exists will be at the referee’s discretion (In agreement with the team captain’s, if in the singles/doubles cup with the players). A referee will disregard a player’s ability when making a stalemate decision. | |
| • If the referee (or opponent- if no referee) confirms a stalemate, the frame shall be restarted with a re-rack. The player who originally broke will restart the re-racked frame. If no stalemate is confirmed, the player must continue their visit. | |
| 11. DOUBLES (Scotch Doubles) | |
| • Scotch doubles are played under the normal game and rules, yet the pair of players take alternative shots each time a ball is played or potted – even at break or when two shots are granted. For example. If Peter and Paul are a doubles pairing, Peter takes a shot and pots a ball, then the visit continues but Paul takes the next shot. Once a visit has ended the partnering player takes the next shot once they re-visit the table. | |
| • Doubles players are permitted to talk to their partners. (EVEN WHEN THEY ARE ADDRESSING/DOWN ON THE TABLE). The player addressing the table, may stand up and talk to the doubles partner. | |
| • Please try to keep this time to a minimum to reduce the length of time doubles matches take to play. | |
| 12. TEAM CAPTAINS YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ENSURING. | |
| THE TEAM ARRIVE ON TIME FOR 8.30PM START, IF YOU ARE RUNNING LATE, PLEASE GIVE THE HOME TEAM A CURTESY CALL. | |
| YOU should know who your players are playing and where, singles / doubles | |
| PLAYERS NOT PLAYING, ARE NOT TO BE ABUSIVE AND/OR MAKE UNNECESSARY NOISE AND/OR BARRACKING IN THE BACKGROUND WHILST THE GAME IS IN PLAY AND/OR PLAYER IS ABOUT TO ADDRESS THE TABLE AND TAKE A SHOT AND/OR MAKE THE OPPOSING TEAM MEMBERS FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE. | |
| ABUSIVE, VIOLENCE, THREATS AND/OR UNSPORTMANSHIP BEHAVOUR WILL NOT BE TOLERATED, ANY PLAYER AND/OR TEAM FOUND GUILTY OF ABUSIVE, VIOLENT, THREATS AND/OR UNSPORTMANSHIP BEHAVOUR WILL FACE DISMISSAL (BANNED FOR LIFE) OR/AND BAN (WEEK LIMITED) AND/OR TEAM LOSE OF POINTS.
